Allie and Jason – Married : Bill Dempsey Elkins Wv Wedding Photographer

This weekend we had the honor of travelling to Lewisburg WV to capture the wedding of Allie and Jason.  We met some really good people and had a great time.

We were doing some detail shots when we learned that Allie had a coat hanger that read: Mrs. Hedrick.  We fell in love with it and had to use it in her photos.

Allie was absolutely gorgeous even before the makeup.  After her getting ready session, she was stunning. I couldn’t wait to see the look on Jason’s face the first time he saw her in her wedding dress.

I love the Lewisburg area.  I’m not sure why, but I still consider the southern part of WV home, even though I haven’t lived there for over thirteen years!  Enough about me, more about Allie! So we took Allie out to a neighboring field after she was finished putting her dress on. I loved the tones of the oats, her skin, and the contrast of her dress – so we used the area for some pictures.

Allie and Jason wanted to see each other before the wedding.  They make a beautiful couple.  It made our jobs easy.

Allie was smiles all day and completely giddy with excitement.   You can see her here doing her best not to smile in this more serious pose.

We call this shot “The Pull”.  A little bit of fun to break the ice during photos.

More of Allie being beautiful:

Jason, being the strikingly handsome Groom he was.

Some of our grooms get a little nervous and tighten up. Not Jason. He was a real trooper and didn’t give us any griefs about posing him.   He was ready to marry Allie, that’s for sure!

A little fun with the wedding Party.  Great group of people.  For that day, we felt like their family.

A little more serious shot of the wedding party.

The church was amazing.  Some congregation members hand timbered  a lot of the wood and trim for the church.

…and the ending to a beautiful day.  Allie and Jason, thank you so much for allowing us to spend the day with you and capture your special moments.  We hope you enjoy your photos as much as we enjoyed taking them.  Best of luck to the both of you!

A little bit of workshop fun

As time goes by, I find myself loving to teach photography more and more. I’ve done several workshops and have several more planned for this year. I’ve had some great classes come through, but this last class is truly blessed. Several great photographers in the group. Traditionally, my workshops are a full Saturday. We do learning in the am hours and then photography later on during the day. This past class was strung out for a SIX week period. We spent one day a week focusing on several elements. We started with basic fundamentals, moved on to shutter speed, aperture and shooting manual. Everyone did very well! We ended our learning with shoot in the park with a local model, Tess.

First, a rule of thirds shot.

A pose by one of our students.  I wasn’t sure I would like the idea, but it turned out to be a great pose. My angle is a tad off here, I was combating 10 other photographers for a place to shoot:)

One of the nice things about shooting pre-spring is that you really have to search for elements to make a photo interesting. Here the class used a picnic table with early spring foliage to add some interest to the pictures. Clouds kept the students on their toes, as light was changing constantly.

This shot was teaching students how to use a reflector. We used a large 42″ gold / silver reflector on this shot.

Another assigment.. Leading lines. The lines of the sidewalk are supposed to lead you to the model, but my position was a little off.

This pose was to illustrate how to achieve great background bokeh at smaller apertures. We used a couple of tricks to get the right effects.

The largest goal of the class was to shoot in manual mode to get constant exposure. Images from a session should flow well in terms of lighting. This photo was taken in drastecly different lighting conditions, but maintains the look of the other photos.

And a quick picture of our class rocking it out!

Another year.

WOW. Last year has blown by and I’m not even sure where it went. My new year’s resolution is to be a better blogger. It’s my resolution to share more sessions with you on the blog and maybe try to be more educational.

Because of some health problems in our extended family we are going to take a VERY reduced amount of weddings this year. This saddens me, but family always has to come first. For 2013, I’m going to focus on High School Senior photography and lifestyle photos. We’ve had a lot of brides contact us and I know we haven’t always gotten back to them – and I’m sorry for that. The decision to scale down our wedding photography was a tough one and weighs heavily on us.

In 2012 we taught two intro to photography classes and had a great turn out. In 2013 I plan to do some more advanced style classes – keep looking here for more information.

What good is a blog post without photos you ask? No good at all I say. So here are some pictures from our holiday “mini” sessions.
We had a couple little ones…
A little one
And some sisters….

That’s all for now. Time to start working on my senior rep applications!

Lindsey : Elkins High School Senior : Bill Dempsey WV Senior Photographer

We’ve now had the pleasure of photographing two of Linda’s beautiful daughters for their senior portraits.   This week we were able to spend some time with Lindsey to capture her senior photos.

We started of with Lindsey at D&E college, it had been awhile since I had been up there shooting, but we got our groove back pretty fast.

When we start a session, I always ask if you consider yourself a good poser or not.  Lindsey didn’t think she was, but I gotta tell you – she did really well.

One of the things I like most about location photography is stumbling on locations you normally wouldn’t think about taking a picture at.  I love this picture of Lindsey – and check her pose out. Perfect:)

Autumn in Elkins? My favorite place and time of year.

This walkway is my normal go-to for Bride and Groom photos and works well for seniors too.

After spending some time at D&E we ventured down towards the park. The light was
starting to get at it’s prime.   I love the swirly bokeh the 50mm 1.2 lens gives me here.

A little more sassier pose.

Melanie ended up joining us an we decided to head down to the river to get some pictures and I’m glad we did.  We made some really great photos

Another river shot.

I completely love this photo.  This is SOOC – for my non-photographer readers, that means it’s straight out of camera with no additional editing or processing on my part. Sharpened up a little on export.

So best of luck with everything you do Lindsey! We had a great time with you. Linda, thanks for allowing us to capture both of your beautiful girls senior portraits.

Brooke : Philip Barbour High School Senior : Bill Dempsey Elkins, WV Senior Photography

This weekend we had the pleasure of photographing Brooke’s High School senior portraits.  We had perfect weather and a blast.

Seriously, Brooke was so photogenic, I think it was impossible to take a bad picture of her.

We started off at the Elkins Depot and got some great shots. The sun was a little bright, but we made due.

Doesn’t she have a great smile?

Quick stop before leaving the depot.

I typically shoot with the 50mm 1.2 lens, but have a new found love for the 70-200 2.8 II. It’s a beast, but I’m loving the results.

A couple of early fall freezes really expedited the leaves falling. We were still able to capture some wonder colors. Brooke is one of those seniors you could photograph all day. She’s a natural poser.

Always scouting for new locations, and we scored big here. I could have spent all day in this area. We had a great time and Brooke was so patient.

I’m loving the sun flare in this image. We just happened to be walking to our next location and spotted this open area. Score:)

Another great area.

Photographing seniors in the water isn’t anything new. What is new for us is that by the time the session was over, Brooke was *Completely* drenched. She had no fear.

My favorite from the day!
